Hometown: Allegedly Shimotsuki Island, East Blue (Actually random village, East Blue)
History:
Kiru was born into the East Blue on an unassuming island town. His grandfather, Zeku, a Shimotsuki Island native, was the last Master of “Bushin Gram” (Fighting God Dragon Slayer) - a style of unconventional weapon use that focused primarily on hunting, with the lore that the first practitioner perfecting this style through a sequence of hunts that ended with him slaying a Dragon God of Martial Arts. With such a unique niche, the fighting style was overshadowed by more traditional weapon styles and martial arts and throughout the generations dwindled from a tribe to a school to a family legacy. Zeku had one child, Kiru’s mother, Natsu before his wife was taken in a hunting accident when Zeku challenged a wayward seaking terrorizing a neighbouring Shimotsuki. In the midst of losing his wife, Zeku was able to save a young orphaned baby who parents were lost in the same attack.
After losing his hunting partner and life partner, Zeku’s name became tarnished. The school closed as his students lost faith and confidence in the fighting style with his wife’s passing. He raised his daughter and surrogate son who he named Hiryu, as best he could with what little work people would call him for, far removed from the prosperity of the thriving school. Having lost her mother to the family business, Zeku’s daughter showed no interest in renewing the family name and honour, wanting it to die as not to lose anyone else in the process. However, the loss of his parents to a monster prompted Hiryu to want to become Zeku’s student to one day save other people from the disaster no one could save his parents from.
With the family name hanging over them, Natsu and Hiryu bonded closely as they grew, being seen as outcasts with the rumours and gossip that surrounded them. This closeness blossomed into a love for one another, but it was always beset by the conflict of the family trade. Inevitably, Hiryu was years into his own career as a hunter, and consistently took more and more dangerous requests to try and rejuvenate the family legacy, working as Zeku’s hunting partner, much to Natsu’s chagrin. The request of a lifetime surfaced, when the same monster that decades ago took Zeku’s wife and Hiryu’s parents was sighted in the East Blue. Natsu was against it, but Zeku argued that her feelings of fear and doubt were selfish, and used the death of those they had lost as a tool to manipulate Hiryu to go with him on this hunt to satiate his own feeling of guilt and vengeance. Hiryu succumbed and they ventured for the monster.
Hiryu was every bit the hunter Zeku needed him to be, but Zeku himself was slower and older than the last time he faced the monster, nigh fatally so. After battling for multiple days as the monster would skirmish, then skarper for food or rest to forcing the duo to chase or retrack it, they finally got the monster to its dying breath, but in said breath, it took in final lunge at Zeku, to which he was unable to dodge. Before he could be swallowed quite literally by his rage, Zeku was saved by Hiryu who was bitten fatally by the monster trying to save Zeku, who was ultimately unharmed. Hiryu died feeling content that he had slayed the beast and avenged his parents , but also that he had a chance to save his master, who gave him his life by saving him in turn so many years ago, using his own dying breath to apologize for not being more capable, and to tell Natsu he loved her.
When Zeku came home with the news of Hiryu’s death, whatever goodwill Hiryu’s feats had recouped completely fell away. Zeku was disgraced and disavowed by other Masters of Shimotsuki for the deaths of both his wife and his student. Natsu fled and became estranged from him, never speaking to him again as his actions cost the lives of her mother and her husband. Zeku, broken and ashamed of how he let his greed, vengeance and shame act so irresponsibility fell into his disrepute with no struggle.
Natsu moored on an unassuming island at the other side of the East Blue, during the trip realising she was pregnant, and had to moor because she was not fight to travel. She gave birth and named Kiru, raising him with more fantasy-orientated versions of his family legacy while training him in the art of Bushin Gram as a means of protection and life skills. Kiru was curious, to the point of being frustrated with these stories of a legacy and lineage because others of the island town saw him and his mother as outsiders and believed his dad to actually be a vagabond or his mother to be the spurned mistress of some other form of lowlife. He wanted to belong and to feel like he had a place and was rejected for it, all the while, his mother insisted that this form of dejection was better than admitting or owning his name and telling them who he really was. He believed that his mother was denying him his heritage by not being able to even see the grave of his father who was a superhero in his eyes. Having never gotten over the trauma of losing her mom and husband, Natsu took ill during delivery of Kiru and never truly recovered, passing away while Kiru and she were arguing about Kiru’s legacy and isolation, with Kiru’s last words as Natsu’s heart began to give and she fell into shock being “I hate that you’re my mother! I would rather be alone than be your son!”
Having no one other that the myths of his family back on Shimotsuki, and now an orphan with the stigma that his cursed family name killed his mother, Kiru buried his mom and fled to find his roots. When he finally arrived at Shimotsuki, believing that his name would render him honour and respect, he got jeered and harrassed, by those who believed the Bushin name to be cursed, or that he was playing a crude joke at the expense of the dead.
Eventually his search for heritage and answers reach the ears of Zeku, who was now living as a bum people called ‘Old man Z’. He tracked down Kiru, and convinced the young boy that he was his maternal grandfather by reciting the true account of their family legacy. Seeing his grandson’s face and instantly seeing both his daughter and his pupil’s resemblance. Zeku brokedown when the ensuing anger and accusations from a young Kiru, made him realise that even his daughter now was dead in a foriegn land of a broken heart without him even being able to properly apologize and atone while he wallowed in self pity and shame on the streets. He admitted his wrong doing to Kiru, expressing that he is the reason Kiru’s family, from his paternal grandparents, his maternal grandmother and both parents are dead, that he is the reason that Kiru was bullied and stigmatised and looked down upon, he handed the boy a dagger and bowed his head to offer up his life so he can end it all, telling the people whatever story he needed.
Kiru, as angry as he was, realised that his last words to his mother made him just as forlorn and remorseful as his grandfather, choosing to forgive him, ultimately acknowledging he didn’t want to leave with nothing. Kiru decided to stay with his Grandpa into his teens to learn all he could about their history, their family trade, and their fighting style, unto Zeku’s final days. Kiru, finding peace with his Grandfather, carried his final will and testament with him. The East Blue would not hire him due to his family name, which had blown into pop culture by then, so he relocated to the North Blue.
